Project "Reclamation" a.k.a Project "CJ4C" - part #6

(03.07.13) The last week has been very busy personally for me, but all in all, I am happy that it is Friday and that we are no longer in the storm path. I spent the morning plowing, shoveling, and doing storm related removal so we could have our new wood stove delivered... yeah, in a storm, a 450 lb. behemoth showed up and we had to remove the old one. Fun times. Anyway after it was all done, I got a few parts prepped for paint, installed a shifter, prepped for a dash pad install and did a lot of other odd ball things.

Their neighbor supplied the rear lense guards, the T150 shifter guard finally came in. I installed the radiator bumpers for the hood and I was able to finally install the T150 shifter and get that squared away. I prepped and pained some parts, and then I set out to install the dash pad I had sitting up in the loft to give a very cool Jeep appearance.

I finished up the evening with putting the shifter on the shift rod and really just set a plan for tomorrow. I need to replace the rear pinion and that requires an in-lb wrench and besides that, the rear diff is pouring out fluid as the pinion was screwed up with the shackle lift. I will fix it all up, just need to get the right tools, as I have the part... here's to hoping!

(03.09.13) I truly hate stripping wheels. It is caustic, it smells, it ruins my driveway, and I have have to clean it all up and dispose of it properly, and then run a water source. It is New Hampshire, in the winter... yeah, water is SNOW! Anyway, all complaining aside, it was 40 today and good enough at the sun apex to break out the hose, the pressure washer and go to town!

The stripping of the OEM wheels went well, but because my hands were in gloves, I don't dare touch the camera. I basically did the before and after shots on this one. The rear taillights now match the fronts thanks to Greg who donated them. Very nice, I just scotchbrited them and painted them and installed them... very cool touch to match the front to the back. The sanding and wirebrushing of the old paint is omitted from the pictures. The best part is it got so warm... LOL... that it baked the rims and the paint is a lot harder than if it was in the cold!!!! Just kiddding, we still need some cure time due to the temp and humidity diferences up here in the semi-great white north!

The dashpad installation went in fine, it wasn't drilled for a dash pand, so I centered it, checked like 15 times and then drilled and now we are in good shape. We has a dashpad in the CJ5 which cleans up the whole dash area and looks good with the shift pattern decal. The dashpad isn't perfect by any stretch, but when you want to drop big money on an original one, it is a very easy swap! The T150 decal is awesome, you have to love it... Reverse up and over to the left, not something you see every day with the moderm machines!

Next up is the pinion seal, clearing the wheels, getting the new rubber mounted, and then putting the tires on the Jeep... after that, the sky is the limit!

(03.11.13) I got a lot of the little things buttoned up yesterday. I installed the snaps on the tailgate for the rear of the soft top. I then tried to put the T150 shifter boot in place and it split... horrible design. I then took it for a ride and it did pretty good, I forgot how a manual Jeep steers... it has been a while since I drove one without power steering.

I finished up the wheels and will have the rubber mounted on Friday and install them on Saturday, which will complete what I have planned for this phase. It has taken over 45 hours to do all the things I have done this round... didn't feel like it, but it took a little less than 2 months to do as well, time flies when you don't have the time to do anything ;) I do realize there are only 3 wheels in the picture, the other one is in the garage and it was already previously clear coated, so it didn't need that today.

All fluids were checked and with the pinions rotating downward due to the shackles being removed, some fluid had to be drained from them, but not too much... that is where the little spot I was seeing was coming from the rear differential.

(03.17.13) I have wrapped up this segment on the Jeep. I spent most of the day yesterday adjusting the clutch and playing with the steering column after I got the tires on the Jeep. The tires came out great and really compliment the Jeep IMHO, but hey, I am the builder, so I am naturally biased. The steering column was making funny noises and I think basically that the column is just old (original) and was used one too many times to get in/out of the Jeep, therefore I think the center shaft is bent slightly, so it rubs when you go back and forth. It isn't a big deal, but short of getting a new steering column, I think it would take a ton of labor to get it all out, apart, straightened, and put back together.

I adjusted the clutch and now it grabs nicely. All in all, a fun project, and I am sure there will be more updates in the future, but the owners need to get it back, try it out, and see what they think... they can then tell what they like, what they don't like, and what they want to change/update/upgrade, for as we all know, Jeeps are never done, they just progress to a new ever-evolving state.

(03.23.13) I found a set of black visors that are in better shape than the tan dyed ones that were in there, so I cleaned them up the best I could and stuck them in there last night. It is almost ready to go home!

Check back soon for updates
