Project "Moab" a.k.a "Just a Tub Swap" - part #14

(07/24/09) Not a whole lot going on these days, I need to wait until the weekend to get some major progress done. I have been poking around in the garage at nights, but only for an hour here and an hour there.

I received a few things in the mail this week and tried to put them on. The roll bar pad looks good on there, but the bikini top was for a sport cage, non-family cage application, we will have to send that back and get another. Hinges should be dry to put on tonight when I have some time and I was able to get the brake booster line hooked up, the blinker on the passenger fender and finally the rear bumper bolts in place... it was a tight squeeze in there.

Anyway, there isn't a ton of things to do here. Wiring the engine is #1 on the list, followed by the driver side fender. Little things to bolt on here and there and finally she should be running enough to test out and see what happens. The hard doors will come later as the Jeep doesn't need them for the rest of the summer. All in all, I hope by Sunday night we could hopefully hear some engine rumblings.

(07/27/09) A very busy weekend and now the Jeep is moving under its own power. We are still waiting on a few gauges, we are also waiting for some more work to be done by me, but all in all, the Jeep is 99% of the way there.

A lot of time has been put in thus far... Curtis has added 97 hours of his time, coupled with my time; we are at 435 hours with about 10-15 more to go. That is just a lot of time period. People often ask how I am able to do this stuff, mainly it is putting in the time, but it also doesn't hurt to have an understanding wife and a wife that has a Jeep of her own ;)

So, as you can see from the pictures, he drove it out of the garage under its own power and he was very happy and excited. We test drove it a bit, checked for leaks, had some strange sound coming from the transfer case (200K miles), but all in all, it worked very well. It is hard to say if it is the transfer case, transmission, or drive shaft. We need to spend a little more time troubleshooting after we know the gauges are all working. The transmission cover has been cut and sectioned, now I just need to weld it up, sand it down, and do a little body work to it before paint. Once that is done, we can put the boots on and the transformation should be complete!

(08/01/09) So, there was a test ride the other day that I forgot that I captured. You can see it here. It is kind of big, so you can just right click and say "Save As" and that will save it to your computer to play. Anyway, it has been somewhat of a slow week on the Jeep. I did manage to get the transmission cover plate going and I put in new gauges and extended the seat belts.

Once the transmission cover was done, I put it in, tried out the boots, took it out, applied some filler, then sanded and sanded and then primed it. Paint is today. The dash is also mostly done as the wiring has been tucked out of the way. I put some more stainless bolts in different places, and finally I am still trying to diagnose the clunk we have when stopping as well as a new what I think to be P/S leak.

(08/03/09) The Red Jeep is back at its home... and I think it even made it into the garage there (not sure on this one). Curtis came and picked up the Jeep with his family and after talking for a bit, we got everyone together and started going down to Massachusetts.

I tailed him until we reached the border to make sure that there wasn't anything leaking or whatever, and then I bid them farewell and turned around and headed back. We still have to rebuild a transfer case for it, do the doors, get the hard top on, and look for a glove box lock, but all in all, the Jeep is able to be enjoyed for the next couple of months while I get the stuff ready to do all of the above.

It has been a fun project, and I look forward to the next one.
