Project "Moab" a.k.a "Just a Tub Swap" - part #2

(04/26/09) I pulled the trigger and went down to pick up the new Jeep that will be used for its body and the rest either sold off or recycled. So I borrowed a trailer from a friend, thanks Greg! and I was on my way down to Massachusetts to pick up the Jeep. I had gone down in the little car to scope it out, first as I didn't want to burn the diesel and tow the trailer for nothing. It wasn't too far and made a lot more sense to do it that way since all the other rigs I have been seeing are fit for the scrap yard.

I returned home and unloaded the Jeep into the workshop and then went and returned the trailer. I then moved onto disassembly of the 1993 YJ Wrangler. The guy I got it from had sold off the engine, the transmission, the hood, windshield, family cage, seats, seatbelts, and some other miscellaneous stuff, so I got what I was looking for and that was the tub. I just had to get rid of the rest, which was mostly junk.

The fenders are shot, as is the frame. I have someone that wants the axles, so I hope by next weekend to have this tub off the frame, onto the frame dolly and starting the transformation into a CJ very soon.

(04/27/09) The body is off the frame... I am tired! I took a bit more off the tub, I was able to get 7 of the body mounts out clean and then 2 just snapped the heads off. Finally, the bad news was that one of the bolts spun, so I will have to fix that. I was also able to get the tubs swapped on the tub dolly, and then moved to the frame which I cut out and separated the axles. I hope to get rid of them soon. I am waiting on a friend to come for the front one, we will see what happens. As you can see, the underside of the tub is pretty clean considering the frame was so rotted.

(05/02/09) The 1993 Jeep is mostly gone... A lot of it was chopped up and went to the recycler, the axles and springs found new homes in other Jeeps and I have a few things up on CraigsList. All in all, it took longer then I had hoped, but now the body is off and ready for some MODIFICATION.

Mostly I have to attack the underside of the tub and see about any issues, so far I saw nothing, but I have to get those plastic liners off and see what is what. I also have 3 body mounts that didn't come out and I cut off. I have to see about getting those out and fixed up. Once that is done, onto the repairs and top body modifications.

(05/04/09) Believe it or not, we ARE actually making progress on this tub, we just haven't had the time to dedicate to it yet. Spring seems to do that... too many other household projects and family events that keep coming up.

There were 2 body mount bolts I cut off with a saw-zall and the 3rd one snapped and spun in its captive cage, so those were addressed this weekend. I got one out by welding a nut to it and it came out easy, the next one had to be cut out and the cage behind it addressed and finally the last one had to be drilled and tapped. That sucked... big time. Almost as much as the other 6 bolts that the previous owner snapped off when removing the cage. Those had to be drilled out, broke an easy out in the process, then had to tap them all.

So, 6 hours later and the underside of the tub is stripped of its YJ stuff, a lot of the broken bolts are now dealt with and what we have to do now is address the 2 rear body mounts that seem to also have cage issues and then one of the seats had a bunch of bolts broken off as well, so still more to come in the removing of broken bolt departments before we can prep the underside of the Jeep, but all in all, moving along nicely.

(05/09/09) There was quite a bit done yesterday. Curtis came up and lent a hand and the tub transformation is officially underway. I think Curtis never wants to drill out another bolt again, that much is for sure, but it did give an insight into how much effort goes into doing this swap correctly.

The rear seat front mounts were the last of the snapped off and broken bolts that we had to remove and for the most part, it went smooth. There was some egging out of the holes on a couple, so now instead of 3/8" bolts; they are now 1/2", no big deal.

The old tub donated some parts so we can get the transformation underway. I had hoped to get a bit more done, especially the tailgate area, but there were no tailgate hinges, so that pretty much put a stop to that. I ordered up some new parts for that and we will attack that next weekend.

The fuel filler is cut out on the other side and the seat mount for the driver side is secured. Basically 2 of the captive nuts broke off on that and the other 2 bolts were snapped off, so we put it in place, put nuts/washers on the bottom and welded them in place so now we recreated the captive nuts. We finished off by cutting up some of the old tub for the recycler and Curtis started with the grinder on the underside of the tub. This was yet another messy and not fun job, but he seemed to enjoy it, AFTER I gave him a mask. We called it quits after 7 hours, so all in all, a good start on the project.
