I just got back from working on the Jeep (10/29/05) and Frank helped me out (and Jen somewhat, she was very cold) helped me in getting a bunch of stuff done on the Jeep. We started out by turning the Jeep around in the garage so we could get some light over the Jeep for when we wired up the dash. This was a very important lesson we learned when we did the previous Jeep. It makes it a lot easier to wire up the Jeep and at the same time be able to connect up the dashboard. Once all the wiring is done, we will then connect up the dash to the Jeep and put the steering column in and we should be good to go.

The morning started out by us going to Trumbull, CT to pick up a set of tires from someone I had talked to on the Jeepforum.com. This allowed me to get a set of Wrangler MTR’s that had about 60-70% tread left for not a lot of money. This really works out well, since the tires that we had were bald and the rims were not looking too good either. The rims were dented and had a lot of curb marks on it. It was time for new rubber and rims. The rims will be ordered up later today and hopefully later this week we will get the rubber on the rims and get them mounted on the Jeep.

Upon arriving at the garage, we cleaned up the tires with the hose and then compared them to the existing tires. I think the new ones will give the Jeep a nice stance with the 1” body lift that is on there. The existing wheels were then removed and the Jeep was put up on jack stands.

With the Jeep in the air, attention turned to the newly refurbished radiator that just came back. It was installed along with all the heater hoses, clamps and radiator hoses that were necessary to get the cooling plumbing out of the way. The fan shroud was reinstalled along with the fan itself. This is all done now. A new thermostat, gaskets, and radiator fluid were bought and installed as well.

I then moved onto checking out the brakes and true to his word, all the brakes appear to be brand new. The fronts have some surface rust, but the rears have all new guts and the drums are new as well. Also something to note is that the rear end seems to have been gone through and it appears that the hubs have been replaced. The stock configuration seems to be what was put back on, but it is good to see that there are new 2-piece hubs on the rear. 1-piece would have been more desired, but all in all, it was a good find.

After that was done, we installed the new rear decal on the tailgate and made sure it was all set before finally moving back to the engine compartment to have a go with the new Weber carburetor. After reading the directions (very important) we were able to get it installed before we called it a day and moved the party over to the Brookside to where we took out all the guys that have helped work on this project thus far to dinner. We had a good time and then we all came back to the shop to see how the Jeep was progressing. Everyone was impressed with how far we had come.

I just got back from working on the Jeep and I got a few more things done. I brought up the indicator lights for the dash and installed them. Getting new ones really cleans up the newly painted dash. After I did that, I started working on assembling the engine bay. I found the starter solenoid, cleaned that up and installed it as well as connecting up the starter from the solenoid. The battery isn’t in yet, so I just ran the cables to where it was supposed to go.

The ignition control module was next and I cleaned that up and drilled out a snapped off bolt that was in there. I moved onto finding the connectors from that in the stock harness and then I moved onto installing the speedometer cable. I used the firewall boot from the stock harness for the computer and ran the cable through there. The rest of the time I spent cleaning up the work area and doing some odds and ends on the Orange Jeep. It is in need of some heart surgery, basically time for an engine rebuild, but what are you going to do. After that, I tried to place the radiator reservoir bottle as well as the windshield wiper bottle, but alas, both were in need of cleanup and the wiper motor needs to be replaced, as it doesn’t work. I need to find a stick shift replacement as well, since there is too much slop in that and finally I need to order up a set of wipers, as I don’t have them and an antenna for the Jeep. After that, all the little things should be done.

The new rims should be here on Wednesday so I will get them and have the tires mounted and hopefully install them on Thursday night when I go up to work on the Jeep. Next weekend is a Jeep show in New Hampshire, so no Jeep work for a couple of weeks.
